Building bridges in the publishing industry

As part of our 75th anniversary celebrations, we are excited to introduce the SYP Bridges initiative. This program offers our members the chance to engage in a 75-minute virtual conversation with SYP Committee alumni to encourage a two-way exchange of knowledge and insights across different generations within the industry.

What is SYP Bridges?

SYP Bridges connects current SYP members with alumni through enriching 75-minute chats. These two-step mini-mentoring sessions are designed to provide valuable learning opportunities and build meaningful connections within the publishing industry. This scheme involves an element of reverse mentoring, encouraging SYP members to discuss their passions and experiences as early-career professionals or hopefuls with SYP alumni.

  • 75-Minute Virtual Conversations: Engage in a dynamic and insightful dialogue with an SYP Committee alumnus.
  • Industry Insights: Discuss various aspects of the publishing world, from career advice to industry trends.
  • Knowledge Exchange: Participate in a mutually beneficial exchange of experiences and insights.
  • SYP Experience: Discuss shared SYP experiences as past and present SYP members.

What Can You Learn From Them?

Most of our SYP alumni have developed varied and successful careers within the publishing industry. These experienced alumni were active members of the SYP community and were once in similar positions as our current SYP members, either looking to get into the industry or develop within it.

SYP Bridges encourages a conversation between current SYP members and alumni so that members can receive practical advice for their own career development, explore how skills can be developed, and learn how the industry has developed over the years.

What Can They Learn From You?

Reverse mentoring bridges generational gaps, fosters awareness about the key concerns and interests of different individuals within the industry, and encourages new ideas and approaches. By promoting mutual learning, it benefits both mentors and mentees, developing a mutually beneficial conversation that drives positive change and discussion within the publishing industry.

Both publishing hopefuls and publishing professionals can apply- you just have to be an SYP member!

How It Works

  1. If you are a member, fill in the simple application form. It is only 3 short questions!
  2. We will then connect you with an SYP committee alumnus based on shared interests.
  3. It is up to the current SYP member to organise a time with the committee alumni for a 75-minute chat. Please note that the sessions can be split into two short sessions reaching 75 minutes in total!
  4. Let us know what you have learnt from the experience alongside what you have enjoyed!
