Scotland Opportunities Applications 2022

Welcome to the application form for the SYP Scotland Opportunities Applications 2022

This form is for anyone applying for our mentorship scheme, our conference committee and our Saltire Awards Shadow Judging Panels.

Mentorship:
Our mentorship scheme is running two threads this year: SYP Into, for those seeking their first permanent role within the publishing industry, who are based in Scotland, and SYP Ahead, for those who are working within the industry and want to find a mentor to help them take the next step, who are based in Scotland.

Conference Committee:
Following the success of our first hybrid conference ‘Foreword Thinking: Publishing for the Future’, we’re looking for volunteers to organise our 2023 conference. We hope that this will be a hybrid event that explores several aspects of publishing aimed at both publishing hopefuls and those in the first 10 years of their publishing careers. We’re keen to hear from those interested or have experience in event organisation, contacting speakers, working on exhibitions and sponsorship, design and social media. Meetings will take place online weekly until Christmas and fortnightly thereafter until the conference which will take place end of March 2023. You must be based in Scotland or be engaged in some way with the Scottish publishing industry.

Scotland’s National Book Awards Shadow Judging Panels:
The shadow judging panel opportunity is for Scotland’s National Book Awards! We’re looking for a mix of students, young publishers and anyone involved in books to form four judging panels for the 2021 Awards. This is a fantastic opportunity to both get involved with the work of the Saltire Society and gain a little insight into how the awards process works, from the position of a judge. Each panel member will be given a copy of the shortlist for their category in digital form (approx. 5 books), and you’ll meet up with your group via Zoom to discuss this in a book club format. You should aim to read all the books in roughly three weeks, so make sure this is something you can do before applying as it’s the most important part! The panel discussions will take place during the week beginning 8th November via Zoom. After judging, each panellist will submit a 150-250 word blog describing their experience and thoughts on the shortlisted books, which will be shared on the Saltire Society and SYP websites. All readers will be invited to the Awards ceremony at the end of November. Please remember that this will require a lot of reading, and each group needs to meet up online on an agreed date in early November. While it will require an intensive few weeks of work, it’s a fantastic opportunity! So, if you’re ready to go, just submit your application by clicking below! GDPR Notice – Your information will be retained by SYP Scotland and the Saltire Society for the sole purpose of organising the shadow panels, and mailing books to you. You will not be added to either organisation’s mailing list.

These opportunities are only open for those based in Scotland. If you are based elsewhere in the UK and Ireland, please visit the main Mentorship page to find the appropriate form to complete.

You can apply to as many or as few of these opportunities as you are eligible for (the exception to this are the two mentorship scheme threads – you can only apply to Into OR Ahead, not both). You do not have to apply to all of these opportunities, nor will the number of opportunities that you apply for affect the outcome of your application(s).

Should you have any questions about any of these opportunities, please refer to the mentorship FAQs page or contact us at syp.scotland.info@gmail.com.

Applications open at 9.00am on Monday 12 September 2022 and close at 11.59pm on Wednesday 5th October 2022.

All answers are for internal use only and will not be shared with any third parties.

We aim to respond to mentorship applications by the end of October, and conference committee and Scotland’s National Book Awards Shadow Judging Panels by mid-October.

Good luck!
