Event Type

It’s a weird time to be in publishing: the promise of technological advance is everywhere, but time and money seems as tight as ever – and you still can’t find the correct ISBN-13 number of next month’s big release.

In this 90 minute AI-free session, we’ll look at ways to use data and technology to give yourself agency and control, and work on some tangible skills that make you an ever more valuable member of any publishing team.

We’ll focus on bibliographic metadata: what it is, what it looks like, how other people use it, and how you can use it. We’ll start with Emma sharing some insights, and then spend 30 minutes actually working with metadata in the ONIX format. You’ll leave the session with your own files and new knowledge: a repertoire you can use the following day at work, or as part of your portfolio. Zero technical experience required, and no special software except a Google account to access Sheets.

This session is ideal for those looking to not only get into publishing, but also advance further in their careers and/or launch within the sector.

Emma Barnes is a book publisher and software developer. She co-founded and runs Consonance.app, a publishing management system, Snowbooks.com, an indie trade publisher, and MakeOurBook.com, a children’s literacy project. She is therefore at that overpopulated intersection of books and technology, which means she enjoys expert insight into both worlds!
