Two Catalan Poets

October 15, 2013 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Arc Publications with the Society of Young Publishers presents Two Catalan Poets.

This is a chance to hear two Catalans (one from Mallorca), who were born at the tail-end of the Franco dictatorship and grew up under a democratic regime. Consquentially their work could not be more modern, comprehensive or polyphonic: politics and history cohabit with love, learned allusion and popular image, songs to the land of one’s birth and to the voyage away.

The evening will be a surreal and playful presentation of identity, what that means to an individual and within a cultural context. Both poets are wonderful readers of their work and will be reading in Catalan alongside English translations of their work. A bi-lingual, cross cultural extravaganza.

Josep Lluís Aguiló is a curious mix of poet and entrepreneur, a director of marketing and advertising. He published his first book of poems aged eighteen, and went on to win the City of Alcover Poetry in 2005 and 2006, the National Critics Award for the best book of poems written in Catalan and a special mention of the jury of the Critics Awards Catalan Writers. In 2007 obtained the recognition of Merit School of Manacor Majorca for his work of creation and dissemination of poetry in Catalan.

Manuel Forcano is a doctor in Semitic Philology. He completed his studies in Israel, Syria and Egypt, and has worked as a lectuer in Hebrew and Aramaic at the University of Barcelona (1996-2004). Author of translations, he has published anthologies of his own poems. He now works as a researcher and playwright at the Jordi Savall Early Music International Centre Foundation.

Reading: free to SYP members, £2 for non-members
