Make Your Own Way into Publishing!
The emphasis on the ‘traditional’ route into publishing can be daunting and
frustrating for many aspiring publishers. However, career paths are constantly
changing within the industry! Nowadays, you can make your own way into publishing
– transferable skills from a huge variety of non-book related jobs are beyond
valuable and HR managers in many publishing houses actively look for candidates
who offer a whole different perspective and bring new ideas through their alternative
routes into the industry. So why not forge your own path into publishing?
In this session, you will gain some brilliant insights and guidance into making your

in different fields of publishing, how to network successfully, how to make a clear
plan to achieve your dream publishing-job and what to do when you face obstacles

Our fifth SYP Publishing Skills Workshop of the year will focus on finding your own
way into publishing and will be led by the amazing co-founders of Hashtag Press
and the Author School, ink! publishing services, and Hashtag BLAK: Abiola Bello and
Helen Lewis. Abiola is the winner of the LBF Trailblazer Awards 2018 and the
founder of The Lil’ Author School. She is also the author of the award-winning
Middle grade series, Emily Knight, a professional dancer, and a successful
entrepreneur. Helen is an experienced book publicist, PR specialist and NCTJ-
accredited journalist. She is the founder and director of the renowned Literally PR,
a boutique publicity and marketing agency. Individually, these women are experts in
their areas of industry and together, these business partners bring decades of
experience from the world of publishing. They are perfectly positioned within the
industry to answer all your questions about finding new ways into the publishing
industry.
