Synopsis
‘They always tell you that you shouldn’t tell lies, but without lies I’d already be in an orphanage.
This, in any case, is my first true lie’
Luca and his mum are like two peas in a pod in their special, fragile world.
Then, one winter morning his mother doesn’t wake up. Luca suddenly finds himself alone for the first time. Terrified of what telling the truth might bring, he decides to keep the biggest secret of his life. Luca goes along to school every day, pretending everything is as it always has been. But he returns home every night to a cold, dark house. So he begins to build a protective bubble with the memories of his mother, the words and stories he so loves – and his cat Blue – against the truth on the other side of the bedroom door.
SYP Oxford is very excited to introduce their very first Book Club meeting. As a general theme, we’d like to read books from independent publishers. There are so many independent presses releasing fantastic books, yet the majority remain unknown and rarely receive the attention they deserve. Supporting independent publishers is important because they have the flexibility to publish new authors or publish a more established author either of whom may be considered too much of a financial risk for bigger publishers. Independent publishers have to constantly innovate to be able to continue
Canongate is one of the most successful independent publishers in Britain today and a brilliant example of innovation. The launched Canongate.TV as a central hub for interviews, short films, blogs. Authors have their own channel where their readers can totally absorb themselves with the literary life of their favourite writer. Canongate have released many notable books such as Life of Pi, the series Simon’s Cat and the now infamous Julian Assange – the Unauthorised Autobiography.
