*Please note: Our usual venue has sadly closed down. We’ll now be meeting at The Sun Tavern in Covent Garden.*
It’s no secret that London Book Clubbers love fiction in all of its forms and this month we’ve chosen our read from a selection of books being adapted for TV. With five votes more than any other book, our July read is Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before tea.
The four horseman are riding, frogs are falling and the forces of Heaven and Hell are amassing for the final battle – well, except for one angel and one demon who have been wandering the world since it began and are actually quite fond of the place. After all, if the world ends, they’ll take all the best things with it. For Aziraphale that’s gravlax with dill sauce, the Daily Telegraph crossword, small antique shops, old book editions and a plethora of fascinating restaurants. For Crowley, it’s Manchester. He’d been particularly pleased with Manchester.
Maybe together – and with a little help from a witch, a witchfinder and a handful of eleven-year-old children – they could stop the apocalypse. Of course that would be a lot easier if someone hadn’t misplaced the Antichrist…
So join Aziraphale, an angel and part-time rare book dealer, and Crowley, an angel who did not so much fall as saunter vaguely downwards, in this hilarious novel which explores just how much you can mess up Armageddon. We’ll be at Mabel’s Covent Garden on 8th July to discuss it!
We’ll be meeting at 7pm and non-members, friends and anyone with an opinion are welcome!
