Publishing Skills Workshop: A Day in the Life of an Editor

August 20, 2018 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Free

Aspiring and existing publishing professionals will have the chance to boost their publishing skills, with each Publishing Skills Worksho focusing on a different area of publishing. The free, interactive workshops exclusively for SYP members will be led by industry experts and offer a real chance to learn and take something away.

We’re often told that Editorial is the most competitive division to get into in publishing. But many aspects of this popular department remain a mystery to those who wish to work in it.

In our summer workshop, we have three members of HQ’s Editorial department ready to give you an insight into Editorial. They’ll teach you how to do key Editorial tasks like titling, subtitles, blurbs, cover briefs. They will even go through the basic proofreading symbols and there will be an opportunity to proof some copy.

Meet our workshop leaders:

Clio Cornish is an Editor with HQ, HarperCollins. She worked in Waterstones until 2011, when she joined Harlequin UK as a Customer Relations Advisor, before moving across to editorial. Clio publishes fiction across the genres, with a focus on crime, thrillers and book club, and won the inaugural LBF Trailblazers Award in 2016.

Charlotte Mursell is an Editor at HQ, HarperCollins, publishing fiction but also some non-fiction. Previously, she worked for Harlequin UK for two years. In 2017 she was selected to take part in the IV Fellowship Programme in Toronto. Earlier this year she published international bestseller The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo and will soon publish the powerful feminist dystopia VOX and the laugh-out-loud debut The Plus One by Sophia Money-Coutts.

Celia Lomas is an Assistant Editor at HQ working across both the fiction and non-fiction lists with a focus on non-fiction. After starting her career in publishing in Sales, Celia moved over to Editorial two years ago and in that time has supported three senior editors, desk editing all their titles, and also built her own list including international bestseller Lisa Unger, debut author and poet Charly Cox and historical fiction writer Kathleen McGurl.

The workshop will take place at HarperCollins on Monday 20th August at 18:30-20:30. Places are limited so please only book a ticket if you are certain you can come. This workshop is available to SYP members only.
