James Spackman will be hosting a Book Pitch Doctor masterclass for BAME junior publishers and jobseekers in conjunction with us at the Society of Young Publishers (SYP).
Up to 30 attendees will be given free entry to a 90 minute webinar at 6 pm on 25 June aimed at developing participants’ skill and confidence at pitching books – a vital skill in publishing. On top of attending the masterclass, participants will be offered a year’s free digital membership to the SYP to further aid their publishing journey.
Places on the masterclass are open to all within the BAME community, whether a current SYP member or not. Those wishing to take part will need to complete this form that includes writing a short statement about why they would like to attend.
James Spackman said: “I’m keen to contribute practically to diversity in publishing, by facilitating BAME publishers’ development of this vital skill, in what will be an engaging and enjoyable masterclass. As The Book Pitch Doctor slogan says, ‘pitching is publishing’ – everyone needs to find their own way to do it well.”
Iram Satti, Inclusivity Officer of the SYP, said: “We are very excited to be working with James on this event. Learning vital skills is the key to building a strong foundation for your career. Alongside helping people develop such skills, at the SYP we are looking to actively challenge inclusion and diversity issues within the publishing industry. One such issue is that according to the Publisher’s Association’s 2019 diversity survey only 13% of participants identified as BAME. Running this workshop is the one small step we hope can begin to tackle this imbalance.”
Applications to attend the masterclass will close at 11:59 pm on Tuesday 16 June. Successful applicants will be notified the week commencing Monday 22 June.
