Career Café: Rights

Join us for our next Career Café panel on the 30th July – this week all about Rights! This essential department in publishing aims to get books into as many different territories, formats and languages as possible. Join our fabulous panel on Zoom where’ll they be discussing all you need to know to understand, enter and progress within Rights.

Panellists:

Oda Siqveland obtained a BSc in Business Administration from Long Island University, NY, and then an MA in Publishing at Kingston University. Her first job in publishing was an administrative project for Palgrave Macmillan during her MA. After graduating she applied for a job in the Rights and Permissions department at Springer Nature where she is currently working as a Rights Executive. She now handles rights and permissions for Springer Nature’s 3000+ journals.

Nathaniel Alcaraz-Stapleton started out in publishing as a Rights Assistant for Cornerstone and Vintage and spent nearly five years at Penguin Random House.  He joined Hachette as a Rights Manager in 2015, was made Head of Rights for Headline in 2018 and Head of Rights for Hachette Ireland in 2019. He handles translation rights (in all direct territories) and serial rights across Headline and Hachette Ireland titles, as well as US rights for all Hachette Ireland titles.

After a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing, Saidah Graham worked in higher education PR and Comms for a year before embarking on an MA in Publishing. Since completing her MA, she’s been working at Bonnier Books as their Rights Assistant, working across a variety of children’s and adult imprints.

Nathaniel McKenzie works at Profile Books as an editorial & rights assistant, a role he has held for two and a half years. He is responsible for managing audio and large print rights for all Profile’s imprints as well as the firms’’ attendance at major international book fairs.

Chaired by:

Elle Brenton-Rounding manages all rights for Stripes Publishing, the fiction imprint of the Little Tiger Group. Especially keen on business development, she is experienced in selling rights across all foreign markets, audio, film and TV; in 2019 alone, she sold titles into over 30 languages, and has clocked up over 40 languages since joining the children’s publisher in 2017. Elle previously worked within the legal team at Springer Nature and also worked in Special Sales at Octopus. She is currently the SYP London Chair and lectures at universities on her MA dissertation topic, The Use of Bibliotherapy in Supporting Bereaved Children, teaching trainee social workers how to use books to support vulnerable children.
