Innovation-in-publishing competition!

We are excited to announce that we’re working with UKSG and the New Library Professionals Network (NLPN) to run an Innovation-in-publishing competition!

Winners receive £1,000 to put towards their innovative idea!

The competition is funded by UKSG, an organisation which connects the knowledge community and encourages the exchange of ideas on scholarly communication. UKSG is a cross-community organisation whose members work in librarianship, publishing and other related fields.

Eligibility

The competition is open only to new professionals (maximum 5 years’ experience), however you can apply as a group or as an individual; when applying as a group, the lead applicant must be a new professional.

  • 1 x winner* will be selected from the publishing community
  • 1 x winner* will be selected from the library community.

Funding will be provided for the winners to develop ideas and concepts of benefit to these sectors. With this initiative UKSG hope to stimulate innovation and creativity in the librarianship and publishing sectors, as well as offering an opportunity for new professionals to raise their profiles.

Possible ideas entrants could submit include:

  • Development of a blog/social media service/tool
  • Development of an app
  • Further development of publishing dissertation research
  • Setting up a new network e.g. NLPN, SYP
  • Many other ideas! The competition is not prescriptive – get creative! If you have an idea, it’s definitely worth applying…

Potential spend for winners of the competition could include:

  • Marketing collateral
  • Event hosting expenses
  • Related technology spend, e.g. website or social media development
  • Travel (to undertake research, surveys etc.).

  • Potential mentor from a UKSG committee member, to provide support if required

Why are UKSG funding an innovation competition? They aim to:

  • Stimulate innovation and creativity in the scholarly communications sector
  • Offer a development and career opportunity for new professionals in both publishing and librarianship.

Reporting

The winning entrants may be requested to undertake 1 or more of the following on behalf of UKSG and NLPN/SYP:

  • Potential progress report to be presented at UKSG forum event in 2019
  • UKSG e-news editorial (UKSG’s e-newsletter)
  • Potential article in Insights, UKSG’s journal
  • Potential breakout session at UKSG annual conference in 2020
  • Potential webinar
  • Feature on UKSG website and social media outlets
  • Potential SYP blog post.

When will entrants find out if they’ve won?!

  • The competition is open until 31 May 2019
  • Decision will made by a selection committee made up of UKSG, NLPN & SYP representatives
  • Decision on winners will be communicated in July 2019.

What’s the process for the winners?

  • Project to last 6 months within September 2019 – September 2020 timeframe
  • Breakdown of expenditure required by April 2020.
