Thursday 22nd July saw the second in the @Phoenix series of networking events for publishing professionals, at the Phoenix Artist Club. A charismatic venue with book covers decorating the walls, it created the perfect setting for publishers to meet up with old friends, discuss the industry and make new connections in an informal environment over a glass of champagne.

With publishers ranging from the large houses such as Headline, Orion and Penguin and independents such as Punked Books, I.B. Taurus and Portfolio Books, to publishing recruitment specialists and magazine publishers at UBM and Titan Publishing, there was certainly a wide mix of experience from all areas of the industry.

Interesting discussions were had regarding the current work climate and the effect this has had on publishing. Expectations are greater than ever, with the emphasis of going above and beyond your job description in order to raise your profile and stand out for promotion.

The SYP is certainly a useful and recognised platform, with such networking events which will assist you to stand out from the crowd, at the same time as meeting likeminded people. So look out for part three of @Phoenix and other useful industry events here.
