Panellists:

Raakhi Vadera

Raakhi Vadera is the HR Manager at Pan Macmillan, and has been there for just over 5 years. She went to Aston University in Birmingham to study Sociology, International relations and Business for undergrad and also completed her Masters in Human Resources Management there too. Raakhi grew up in Manchester and then Nottingham and after her Masters moved straight to London and has been there for 7 years. She started her career in HR in financial services but very quickly chose to make the move into the creative industry where she has found out that her job satisfaction is much higher.

Aimee Dewar

Aimee Dewar is Marketing & Design Executive at BookMachine, a global community and knowledge hub for book publishing professionals. She is also a freelancer in typesetting and marketing design, working with publishers, authors and small businesses to design their books, websites and marketing materials. Having first set up as a part-time freelancer in 2014, and later completing a Publishing MA in 2016, Aimee joined the BookMachine team at the height of the 2020 pandemic after a period of freelancing full time. She has since helped the community grow its membership of publishing people and regularly works with partners from across the industry. Aimee was also SYP London’s Social Media Manager in 2018, before becoming Co-Chair in 2019, and is Co-Founder of the Publishing Freelancers Facebook group.

Portia Chauhan

Portia Chauhan is a Marketing Assistant at Hay House Publishers. She started her job remotely back in November and as of yet hasn’t met any of her colleagues in person. Portia studied at Queen Mary, University of London for her English Literature BA and whilst she was studying, completed a work experience placement at Bloomsbury Publishing which is where she discovered that publishing was the industry for her. Prior to landing her publishing position, Portia completed a communications internship which was fully remote so she is looking forward to sharing some, hopefully, useful WFH tips and how to apply them to the wonderful world of publishing!

Abbie Headon

Abbie Headon is a freelance editor and writer. She has worked in various editorial roles at OUP, Summersdale, Duckworth Books and HarperCollins over a seventeen-year-long career, and she currently edits the BookMachine blog as well as working for a wide range of publishing clients. Abbie is also the author of books including The Power of Yes, The Power of No, LEGO Build Yourself Happy and I’m Not Wearing Any Trousers. She’s a Fellow of the RSA and a keen TikTokker, posting whenever inspiration strikes at @stupidbookjokes.

Hannah Griffiths

Hannah Griffiths is an Event Co-ordinator for the SYP London. She has worked in marketing at Scholastic for almost five years and is currently their Schools Marketing Officer. She also manages the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards, known as the Lollies. In her spare time, Hannah volunteers for the Children’s Book Project as their Social Media Manager.
