50 Years of InPrint Magazine

Posted on February 10, 2025 in InPrint

In 2024, the Society of Young Publishers (SYP) celebrated 75 years since its founding. A little-known fact is the first InPrint magazine was published in November 1974, marking 50 years of using the written word to educate and represent the voices of our members. Later, this evolved to include our websites, blogs, and social media.

This first subject of note was ‘The Literary Agent: Nuisance or Necessity?’

This was a key subject, and would-be writers and publishing houses have discussed it since. This article’s importance is to start a discussion of the various factors involved in choosing a literary agent and how these factors impact dynamics across the publishing journey.

As our members have changed, so have we evolved. Our articles and content focus on what we as a society want to promote by keeping true to our core values. Through our volunteers, we have created wonderful content and celebrated key industry successes.

You can unearth some hidden gems in the vaults of the SYP archives. For example, in 1986, Bloomsbury Publishing House was founded, and InPrint was there to interview what would now be a household name. For the readers of the magazine, it may have been a passing article to look over. Yet they were the first to know about something great that would leave a lasting impact on the industry.

The takeaway is that no matter where you are in your journey and who you meet and work with, you are part of the rich tapestry of publishing, and you may not realise the significance of certain points in your journey until much later.

Another article found and mentioned in our SYP 75th anniversary edition focused on Sony launching their Data Discman. This focused on a device that would be the initial blueprint of what would become e-readers.

This teaches us as members that we receive a wealth of news and information about industry and technology changes. We can also use this information to understand future roles, trends, and skills that we could acquire to adapt to our ever-changing industry.

As we move forward in 2025, ask yourself these questions about SYP:

  • Am I utilising the network events?
  • What can I learn from our magazine, website, and social media?
  • Am I taking advantage of the resources that are available via our partners and other organisations supporting SYP?

50 years of InPrint and evolving resources across platforms are available to advance our publishing career goals. It is up to each of us to act and pave our own legacy in a society passionate about inclusivity and growth.

What is stopping you?
