SYP 75th Anniversary: Interview with SYP Alumni: Jason Mitchell
Posted on June 6, 2024 in 75th Anniversary

As part of our 75th anniversary celebrations, we are interviewing alumni to learn more about the SYP and the values that underpin our society.
We are interviewing Jason Mitchell, who coordinated the launch of the first six-month mentorship scheme through the London Committee, with the support of the then SYP Chair, Jon Slack.
This inaugural scheme supported 10 individuals, focusing on those at the early stages of their publishing careers.
How did the SYP mentorship scheme come about and why did you view it as so important to SYP to launch it?
Getting to know Gordon Graham, former Chairman of Butterworths and founder of publishing journal LOGOS (published by Brill), who was a mentor to me in hindsight. In his 80s and 90s he was an inspiring character; excellent at nurturing ideas and bringing people together from all parts of the industry. He was a natural leader / mentor. It made me think this approach, as a formal cross-company mentoring scheme, could be useful for SYP members.
How valuable do you see mentorship for those looking to get into or ahead within the industry?
It certainly has its place and can be useful especially if the mentoring goal is well constructed, and the pairing works out.
What is one piece of advice you have for mentees applying and completing the scheme?
As above, really putting some consideration, time and thought into the overall goal at the outset, so that it is achievable and provides a valuable experience and outcome for the mentee.
Do you think the act of being a mentee/mentor or discussions about ‘mentorship’ have changed over the years?
I think people are more informed now, and there are more resources available (e.g. mentoring platforms), so that has been a positive change.
What do you think is so special about the mentee/mentor experience?
One person having a vested interest in another. A mentor agreeing to make the time to help, encourage and develop another, which is largely typical of the publishing industry.
Have you been a mentor on the mentorship scheme before and what was your experience?
Yes, and it has been positive for me. It’s been a real privilege to get to know a mentee, and provide support and advice for them.
What is your fondest memory of the SYP?
Getting to know people that I remain in touch with. It’s all about people at the end of the day.
