Looking forward to #SYPConf20! SYP LDN speaks to Emma Ronan of The Slumbering Slothcast

Posted on November 6, 2020 in London

Things are a little different this year! Ahead of our Turning the Page Conference in November, we’re chatting to some publishing folk you may recognise. Today, we sit down with Emma Ronan, the co-creator of Publishing Hopefuls FB Group and founder of The Slumbering Slothcast to see what they’re excited for ahead of Conference.

For those of us who might not know, could you please tell us a little bit about who you are and what you both do in publishing?

I’ve recently graduated from with a degree in English with Publishing from the University of Plymouth. I started running a creative careers podcast with my partner while I was studying and that’s how The Slumbering Slothcast began. During lockdown, I also co-founded the Publishing Hopefuls Facebook Group with Christina Storey of TheStoreyBookClub bookstagram.

Have you attended an SYP Conference before? If yes, what year did you attend and how was it? If no, was there anything which put you off in previous years?

I did back in 2018 in London and I loved meeting everyone in person! Of course, things will be a little different this year as it’s all online but I’m sure it’ll still be amazing.

What are you most excited about ahead of this year’s Conference?

I’m looking forward to learning new skills and news about the publishing industry. Especially with everything going on this year with the pandemic, it’s more important now than ever to be open and proactive about upskilling.

Are there any panels in particular that you’ll be keeping an eye on? What are they and why have they caught your eye?

I’m particularly excited for the ‘Let’s Hear It For Audio’ panel. As an avid listener of audiobooks, I can tell you that there’s something magical about the experience of listening to one. I want to know more about the production process and how they come to life!

How do you think attending SYP Conference will support you and your publishing career going forward?

I think it will definitely help with networking and learning how to adapt my CV and cover letter for each role. Each panel is a fantastic learning curve and one step closer to my dream role!

You can listen to The Slumbering Slothcast on Spotify, Apple Music and more.

Join us on the 9th-13th November. Have you got your tickets yet? Head over to our shiny new Conference website and grab yours!
