Students Tips: Making the Most of Your Work Placement

Posted on March 29, 2019 in UK

Today we have another interview with fellow student, Sophie Griffiths to share her recent work experience with Diva Magazine.

How did you get your work experience?

I emailed the company with my CV and a cover letter directed at them specifically. As it was a magazine, I also included a sample article which I wrote for their target audience so they could see that I understood the magazine and how they write.

How did you prepare?

I read a few issues of the magazine, followed their social media to see what they were doing currently, regularly read the articles on their website to get a feel for their work.

What did you struggle with while you were there?

It was based in London, so money and the long commute were the biggest struggles. If you’re doing work experience in London, make sure you can afford it first and have somewhere to stay or leave yourself time to save up a bit of money.

Would you do anything differently?

I would prepare a few more questions to ask while I was there so that I could get the most out of the experience.

What were you most nervous about?

I was nervous to meet everyone but as soon as I got into the office, I was absolutely fine, everyone was lovely. I also had to interview a famous musician on my first day, so I was nervous about making the interview last long enough and making a good impression, but luckily it went really well.

Was it what you expected?

It was a lot more journalistic than I was expecting but I really enjoyed that aspect of the job.

Did it help you understand the industry more?

Yes, I now understand the differences between the magazine publishing industry and traditional book publishing, and I think that is really valuable.

What tips would you offer someone preparing for a work placement?

Say yes to everything! Every opportunity they offer you will be really great experience and it will definitely give them a good impression of you. The more enthusiastic and willing to try anything you see, the better. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for some feedback, it’s really helpful for the company to tell you what they think you’re good at and what you could improve on.
