Society of Young Publishers (North and Midlands) event

To mark the summer season, the Society of Young Publishers committee 2013 held a unique social for its third monthly event. The Great Gatsby Summer Social at the Maven in Leeds was met by another successful turnout. There were also those that paid homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s popular work, going one step further and dressing up in traditional 1920s costumes and outfits.  The event was split into two sections. The first kept to SYP convention, and invited authors to read their works.

This month’s chosen author-readers were Adam Lowe, S.J. Bradley, Richard Smith.  The audience listened intently as the authors read recent and previous works. The topics ranged from perspectives of a Monster (Adam Lowe), to a daughter’s relationship with her mother in “Weak Heart” (S.J.Bradley). Richard Smith read some of his works that had a more performance-based feel to them.

Next, in the second section of the night, Steve Bellamy treated audiences and the SYP committee to an acted reading from the introduction of The Great Gatsby.

As ever the event had something for everyone, hosting an array of variety of topics and subject matters from authors and speakers involved. Further, it gave the opportunity to introduce potentially new audiences to the ever-popular Great Gatsby.
