The 24 Hour Book

Posted on October 1, 2009 in News & Reviews

On Saturday, 3rd October, something really quite exciting is happening. The SYP are joining forces with our friends at Completely Novel, Spread The Word and if:Book, to write an original story book in just 24 hours.

Set around a group of inner city London allotments, the story will explore ideas of shared and private space and the real and imaginary barriers between a range of different city characters.

The book will be written by a group of experienced writers working together, around the clock, between 10am on Saturday 3rd October and 10am on Sunday 4th October. Then during the day on the Sunday, a group of volunteer editors (the SYP) and publishers (Completely Novel) will proofread, copy-edit and typeset the story ready for publication. The book will then be printed using the latest print-on-demand technology, ready for it to go on sale in hard copy (and download) on Monday 5th October.

Are we mad? Perhaps. Can it be done? Absolutely. Most importantly, do you want to get involved?

The SYP are putting together an editorial team to work on this project, and we would like to hear from you if you have experience of proofreading, copy-editing, typesetting and illustrating. A small number of us will be coordinating the editorial process from SYP HQ in London; however, we want to encourage SYP members across the country to get involved remotely, to help us edit and produce this book and take part in a once in a lifetime publishing experience, all from the comfort of your own home.

So, if this sounds like something that appeals to you and you’d be keen to help out, then please contact Alan Crompton, SYP Oxford Chair at  as soon as possible to find out more.
