SUMMARY:SYP North October Book Club: Carmilla
DESCRIPTION:Book enthusiasts\, join us on Zoom to talk about Sheridan Le Fa
nu's Gothic novella Carmilla.\n\nOur Book Club meetings are an informal s
pace to chat with other readers and publishing hopefuls. There are no expe
ctations for you to contribute to the discussion or to have your camera on
  - we want everyone to join in a way that is comfortable for them! Whether
you've finished the book\, are part-way through or haven't even opened th
e cover\, we would love to see you there.\n\nCarmilla:\n\nPublished twenty
-six years before Dracula\, Le Fanu's Carmilla is a key early work in vamp
ire fiction.\n\nThe story follows Laura\, a young woman haunted by a child
hood encounter with a spectral woman. When a mysterious girl\, Carmilla\,
comes to stay at Laura's castle\, they grow close. But Carmilla’s strang
e behavior—sleepwalking\, avoiding prayers\, and making romantic overtur
es—begins to trouble Laura. Haunted by violent dreams and waking to find
bite marks on her neck\, Laura's father intervenes. It becomes clear that
Carmilla\, whoever she is\, is far from the innocent young girl she claim
s to be.\n\nSheridan Le Fanu:\n\nJoseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was an Iri
sh writer of Gothic tales\, mystery novels\, and horror fiction. He was a
leading ghost story writer of his time\, central to the development of the
genre in the Victorian era.\n\nJoin our Discord server for casual bookis

SUMMARY:SYP North February Book Club: Tender is the Flesh
DESCRIPTION:Book enthusiasts\, join us on Zoom to talk about Agustina Bazte

an informal space to chat with other readers and publishing hopefuls. Ther

 them! Whether you've finished the book\, are part-way through or haven't e

this book is at points very shocking with content that could upset reader
 s. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss this before you sta

nTender is the Flesh:\n\nIt all happened so quickly. First\, animals becam
e infected with the virus and their meat became poisonous. Then government
s initiated the Transition. Now\, ‘special meat’ – human meat – is
legal.\n\nMarcos is in the business of slaughtering humans – only no on
e calls them that. He works with numbers\, consignments\, processing. One
day\, he’s given a gift to seal a deal: a specimen of the finest quality
. He leaves her in his barn\, tied up\, a problem to be disposed of later.
\n\nBut she haunts Marcos. Her trembling body\, and watchful gaze\, seem t
o understand. And soon\, he becomes tortured by what has been lost – and
what might still be saved.\n\nAgustina Bazterrica:\n\nAgustina Bazterrica
is an Argentinian novelist and short-story writer. She is a central figur
e in the Buenos Aires literary scene\, working as a cultural organiser and
workshop curator. She has received several awards for her writing\, most
notably the Premio Clarín Novela for her second novel\, Tender is the Fl
esh\, which has been translated into over 20 languages.
