JOIN THE LONDON COMMITTEE

Welcome to the application page to volunteer for a position on the SYP London Committee.

Applications are now closed. Volunteer roles for 2023 will be open for applications in late November/early December 2022.

Positions on the London Committee are open to applicants based within the London area. If you wish to apply to be a member of one of the other committees (UK, Ireland, North, Oxford, Scotland, South West) or to find out what roles they have available, return to the main Volunteer with the SYP page.

Please note that while these positions are voluntary, it does require a commitment for the year in order to keep the society running successfully. Each position will also involve participating in committee meetings, as well as contributing to possible events or online ventures.

London Treasurer

This role demands attention to detail and organisation in the management of the SYP London bank account. You will need to process conference and event fees and committee expenses. It is important to keep a record of the incomings and outgoings of money to ensure that the branch stays within its budget and regularly report spending to the UK Treasurer. The London Treasurer is expected to draw up a monthly report of spending within the London SYP committee, liaising with the Head of Events and Marketing team regularly.

London Social Media Manager

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining SYP London’s social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram)
  • Promoting SYP London’s social and speaker events and sharing/re-posting topical stories and articles
  • Producing marketing materials in good time for SYP London events and initiatives to share on social media
  • Designing and producing marketing materials (such as flyers) for events to share on social media
  • Assisting the Communications Manager, where necessary, with maintaining the SYP London website
  • Working closely with the Communications Manager to ensure materials reach all of our members via our social channels and monthly newsletter
  • Co-ordinating the monthly SYP London newsletter with the Communications Manager
  • Live-tweeting events will also be required where necessary
  • Providing feedback at monthly meetings and contributing to event brainstorming
  • Experience using In-Design/Canva is essential

London Digital Content and Communications Manager

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the SYP London website by ensuring that all of SYP London’s forthcoming social and speaker events are listed in a timely manner
  • Producing marketing materials in good time for SYP London events and initiatives (e.g. the workshop scheme; KSW prize announcement; LBF seminars; London conference)
  • Designing and producing marketing materials (such as flyers) for events
  • Co-ordinating the monthly SYP London newsletter
  • Providing feedback at monthly meetings and contributing to event brainstorming
  • Live-tweeting events will also be required where necessary
  • Experience using In-Design/Canva is essential
  • Excellent writing skills (e.g. blogs and digital content)
  • WordPress experience is preferable

As part of the Digital Content role, you will also be part of a team of delegates from each branch who will be:

  • Developing a Resource Centre for SYP members
  • Liaising with the regional committees to manage the uploading of online content to the SYP marketing channels
  • Creating content offering publishing insights or career advice
  • Sourcing articles from external partners and companies

London Head of Events

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that events for the year are planned well in advance
  • Fostering good relationships with potential speakers and local venue managers, and maintaining and building on the existing database of contacts
  • Arranging meetings with the events team and other committee members to discuss upcoming events
  • Budgeting for venue hire, speaker expenses and miscellaneous expenses such as prizes
  • Sending monthly updates to the treasurer in order to assist with their monthly report
  • Outline event updates in each committee meeting and to email reminders to the committee of any events that are due to come in the near future

London Events Coordinator (6 positions)

There are six London Events Coordinators on the Committee. Their responsibilities include:

  • Scouting out suitable event spaces across central London
  • Approaching publishing professionals to speak at our events
  • Fostering good relationships with potential speakers and local venue managers, and maintaining and building on the existing database of contacts
  • Providing creative contribution to the organisation and planning of events
  • Working with the Social Media Manager to arrange publicity via social media around upcoming SYP events

London Book Club Coordinator (2 positions)

The Book Club Coordinator is responsible for organising and hosting the London book club every month. This includes organising the venue each month, selecting book options for the book club to vote on for the next meeting, liaising with interested members and ensuring the details of each book club are advertised in good time ahead of the meeting.

Student Outreach Officer (2 positions)

Responsibilities include:

  • Making contacts at London universities, sending information about the SYP, and exploring event or collaboration opportunities
  • Career fair representation and sending flyers to events/talks etc.
  • Organising and hosting student socials (such as around the beginning/end of term?)
  • Write-ups student events for the SYP blog, Press Forward
  • Seeking possible partnerships with other companies or organisations
  • Running occasional Facebook chats with students/using a hashtag to generate conversation amongst students in our online community
  • Continuing to guide your peers in the direction of the SYP, and letting them know about upcoming events, either online or in person

Career Support Officer (2 positions)

Responsibilities include:

  • Plan and host monthly Skills Workshops, introductions into a particular skill in publishing for those coming to the industry with no or little prior experience.
  • Sourcing speakers and setting them aims for the session (but will mainly be speaker-led)
  • Running a pitching system for members apply for spaces, and selecting those who will attend
  • Liaising with the marketing team to publicise and create graphics
  • Creating copy for website outlining the session and the speaker
  • Facilitating the session and posting to social media/sending pictures and captions to the social media manager to post
  • Creating a write-up of the session to post on our blog, Press Forward
