Want to be part of the SYP Oxford Committee for 2017?

The SYP committees are made up of volunteers that use their spare time to run the society.

The committee roles are open for all applications, although some roles require a member to have been on the committee for at least a year before applying (please see descriptions).

The Oxford committee term runs from January 2017 to January 2018.

Applications will reopen each year and member can volunteer on an SYP committee for up to 3 years in total.

Although the committee is a fun and voluntary role, it does require commitment for the year to keep the society running successfully and will involve attending monthly committee meetings in Oxford, as well as helping out at various events including the annual conference.

Oxford Chairs (Chair and Vice-Chair or two Co-Chairs)

The Oxford Chairs will be responsible for the management of the Oxford committee. This will include holding monthly Oxford committee meetings, ensuring all roles in the Oxford branch run successfully to maintain and grow the society. Reporting into the UK Chair, they will be required to provide regular updates and represent the Oxford branch at events. *The Oxford Chair applicant must have been previously part of the committee for a minimum one year.*

Oxford Treasurer (x1)

A role that demands attention to detail and organisation providing the management of the SYP Oxford bank account. You will need to process conference & event fees and committee expenses. It will be important to keep a record of the incomings and outgoings of money to ensure that the branch stays within its budget. The treasurer will also take minutes at committee meetings.

Oxford Marketing Co-ordinator (x2)

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the website by ensuring that all of SYP Oxford's forthcoming social and speaker events are listed in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining SYP Oxford's social media channels by promoting SYP Oxford's social and speaker events and sharing/re-posting topical stories and articles.
  • Designing and producing marketing materials (such as flyers) for events.
  • Co-ordinating the monthly SYP Oxford newsletter.
  • Keeping track of an annual budget, reporting any expenses to the Co-Chairs and Treasurer.
  • Providing feedback at monthly meetings and contributing to event brainstorming.

Social Events Co-ordinator (x2)

Responsibilities include:

  • Organising and hosting social events once a month
  • Booking event venues and organising the refreshments, decorations, music, as required.
  • Fostering good relationships with local venue managers, and maintaining and building on the existing database of contacts
  • Outlining event updates in each committee meeting and to email reminders to the committee (esp. marketing team) of any forthcoming events
  • Running a monthly book club
  • Writing clear and engaging copy for the website and social media to promote social events, as well as occasionally putting together additional material for events, such as quiz questions
  • Keeping track of an annual budget and costings, reporting any expenses to the Co-chairs and Treasurer.

Speaker Events Co-ordinator (x2)

Responsibilities include:

  • Organising and hosting speaker events each month (excluding July and August)
  • Booking event venues and organising the refreshments, decorations, music, as required.
  • Fostering good relationships with potential speakers and local venue managers, and maintaining and building on the existing database of contacts.
  • Outlining event updates in each committee meeting and to email reminders to the committee (esp. marketing team) of any forthcoming events
  • Writing clear and engaging copy for the website and social media to promote speaker events
  • Keeping track of an annual budget and costings, reporting any expenses to the Co-chairs and Treasurer.

Oxford University Student Liaison Officer (x1)

We would like one student liaison (ideally a student themselves) who would be responsible for spreading the word about the SYP and our events to university students and careers services to help bring new members to join the society and attend events.

Responsibilites include:

  • Promoting the SYP and our events to Oxford University through print and online materials supplied by the Marketing Co-ordinators, as well as through presentations and word-of-mouth.
  • Advising the committee on the major assignment deadlines and other events that could affect attendance at events and committee meetings.
  • Providing feedback at monthly meetings and contribute to event brainstorming
  • Working in conjunction with either marketing, social events, or speaker events team to provide additional support as and when required.
