Greetings SYPeeps! Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of our revamped newsletter. We'll be bringing you information about our upcoming events and other publishing-related tidbits. This month's issue features a round-up of 2014's packed calendar of social and speaker events and Q&As with Jenny Redhead, SYP Oxford Co-Chair and Antonia Seymour, VP and Content Acquisition/Publishing Director at John Wiley and Sons. Read on for an opportunity to get involved in the running of the 2015 committee.

2014 in brief

We kicked off 2014 with a bang with our Open Book Party. You came in your droves, not to mention in fancy dress! This year, we have truly put the 'pub' in 'publishing' with our pub quizzes and pub crawls (one murder-mystery themed, and another to welcome the new Oxford Brookes MAs).

Our speaker events have explored the current issues affecting the publishing industry - there was a lively discussion on the issues and challenges of Open Access, and our Independent Love In at Blackwells looked at the independent publishing industry at a time of destabilisation and change. The Publicity and Marketing Mingle was an opportunity to network with publishing professionals in a relaxed setting. The speakers for our Editor Uncovered event delivered their words of wisdom to a packed room at the Turl Street Kitchen, before we rounded off the year with our Children's Publishing event at the Story Museum.

At the end of the year, many of you joined us for our Jolly Jumpers Christmas Bash with your fabulously festive Christmas jumpers. The mulled wine and cider flowed fast and free and a good time was had by all! We look forward to more fun and frolics in 2015!

Want to get involved?

SYP Oxford are on the look out for new committee members. If you are interested in being part of the 2015 committee, drop us a line at syp.oxford.info@gmail.com or come along to our next committee meeting on the 22nd of January at Oxford University Press.

Roles up for grabs:

  • Social Events Coordinator (x2)
  • Oxford Brookes Student Liaison (x2)

and more.

Have a read of Jenny's Q&A (below) to find out what being on the SYP Oxford committee is like.

In each newsletter, we will have a Q&A with a SYP Oxford committee member to give you an insight into what life is like as a young publisher and with an established publishing professional to give those who have just started their careers (or studies!) something to aspire to.
