Book club, bloggers and become part of the SYP Conference 2015

Welcome to our March newsletter, SYPeeps! Only a quarter of the way through the year and we are well into our packed calendar of social and speaker events. In this month’s newsletter we’ve got details of all our latest events, so you can put the dates in your diaries. Plus, a chance to get involved with the SYP as we begin to recruit a team for the SYP Conference 2015, taking place in Oxford later this year. Think you have what it takes? Then read on. And as usual, see below for our Q&As – this month with SYP Oxford chair, Aileen Taylor, and Caroline Priday, European Director of Publicity at Princeton University Press. Happy reading!

SYP Annual Conference 2015 - Recruitment

SYP Oxford is calling out to all the bright young things on the Oxford Publishing scene to join our Conference committee, and help put together one of the biggest events in this year’s publishing calendar: the SYP Annual Conference 2015.

The last conference hosted in 2013 by SYP Oxford attracted 300 delegates (from the UK, Europe, and beyond!) with a fantastic roster of top industry professionals from all areas of the publishing industry.

We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to help us put on another great conference.

If you’re creative, passionate about publishing, events, and people, and if you’re up for a new and exciting challenge – then please get in touch!

Drop us an email on: for details on how to apply.

Upcoming events
Book Club

After reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird at our last book club, we will be discussing The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter on the 7th of April, at the Jericho Tavern.

For a chance to win a copy of The Magic Toyshop, keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter!

In each newsletter, we will have a Q&A with a SYP Oxford committee member to give you an insight into what life is like as a young publisher and with an established publishing professional to give those who have just started their careers (or studies!) something to aspire to.

Aileen Taylor, SYP Oxford Chair and Assistant Production Controller at Oxford University Press

You are the 2015 Chair of the SYP Oxford Committee, what do you wish to achieve in this new position?

This year I’d like to keep on encouraging members to come along to our events. SYP Oxford will be hosting the SYP conference this year and I hope to help make it another brilliant event.

Caroline Priday, Head of Office Europe and European Director of Publicity at Princeton University Press

What does your role as European Director of Publicity entail?

My team and I are responsible for the promotion of Princeton titles in Europe, Middle East, Africa and South Asia. This includes print and broadcast media coverage, organising author tours, pitching to literary festivals, social media coverage and pretty much anything else you can think of. Publicity is so much more than just sending out books to review editors now – you really need to be marketing the author and not just the book.
