What We Do

From regular panels, workshops and networking events, to our bi-annual all-day conference, we host events around the country to explore current trends and debates to help you develop the skills and contacts you need to progress in your career. We also hold socials including quizzes, book clubs, exhibition trips and book swaps so you can keep in touch with your literature-loving peers.

Reports & Campaigns

Diversity & Inclusivity

The SYP aims to be a fair, diverse and inclusive society, welcoming members and non-members from all backgrounds and having the diversity of our industry and membership reflected in our committee. Publishing can be a challenging industry when it comes to breaking glass ceilings, and this is precisely why we launched the Diversity & Inclusivity series. Through interviews, podcast episodes, blog articles, we want to show you that you belong, whatever your background; we want to connect you with professionals who can inspire and guide you; we want to offer you tools to make a difference, through the voices of those who are already shaping the future.

We hope you’ll love this journey as much as we are loving travelling it.

Awards and Projects

The SYP support a number of awards and projects that reward young talent including the Trailblazer Awards for those ‘roaring through their 20s’, the Kim Scott Walwyn Prize for women in the first 7 years of her career who is acting above and beyond and The Gilbert Collection, an anthology of poetry by male writers published by the SYP to raise money for the Everyman Charity. We are publishing the sequel in autumn 2017.

We are also committed to driving inclusivity in publishing. We have an internal Inclusivity Team with members from every branch dedicated to improving how we better represent the community, and we often work with the Publishers Association (PA) and the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) on projects to improve representation in the industry. In 2020 the SYP’s Mentorship Schemes were extended to offer more and more aspiring and current publishers the chance to gain guidance from mentors within the publishing industry.
