SUMMARY:SYP Ireland May Book Club: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
DESCRIPTION:\n\nJoin us for our May Book Club to discuss I Know Why the Cag
ed Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.\n\nWhether you’re a frequent flyer at boo
k clubs or want to venture out for the first time\, come along for some bo
okish chats and some delicious food!\n\nEvent Information\n\n Date: Satur
 day 31st May 2025\n Time: 6 pm\n Location: The Port House\, 64 William S
 t S\, Dublin\, D02 XW99\n\nI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings:\n\nHere is a b
ook as joyous and painful\, as mysterious and memorable\, as childhood its
elf. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely childr
en\, the brute insult of bigotry\, and the wonder of words that can make t
he world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic
beloved worldwide.\n\nSent by their mother to live with their devout\, se
lf-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town\, Maya and her brother\
, Bailey\, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local
“powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in
St. Louis\, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live
with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later\, in San Francisco\, Ma
ya learns that love for herself\, the kindness of others\, her own strong
spirit\, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with Wi
lliam Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.\n\n
Poetic and powerful\, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts an
d change minds for as long as people read.\n\nMaya Angelou:\n\nMaya Angelo
u was an American memoirist\, poet\, and civil rights activist. She publis
hed seven autobiographies\, three books of essays\, several books of poetr
y\, and is credited with a list of plays\, movies\, and television shows s
panning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 hono
 rary degrees.
