The Independent Alliance of Publishers in partnership with the ICA present a one-day festival to celebrate and explore independence in all its many guises, focusing on the core values of independence, integrity and innovation.
Independents Day Programme
Introduction (2pm–2.15pm)
An introduction to the Independent Alliance and the programme of events by Stephen Page (Faber).
Industry and Independence (2.30pm–3.30pm)
What constitutes being ’independent’? And what is the future for independent business? A high-profile panel debates the art of being independent in the 21st century. The panel discussion is chaired by Justin Webb, and features Stephen Page (Faber), Gregor Muir (ICA), and Laurence Bell (Domino Records).
Break (3.30pm–4pm)
The State We’re In (4pm–5pm)
A high-profile panel debate on how the current economic climate is affecting publishing, the arts and media industries. The panel discussion is chaired by Stephanie Flanders, and features Andrew Franklin and John Lanchester.
Making Debuts (5pm–6pm)
What are the prospects for a first-time writer? What is the key to discovering new talent and what role does the independent sector play in nurturing the stars of tomorrow? Writers and editors talk about their publishing experiences, with a panel discussion followed by a Q & A chaired by Erica Wagner (Literary Editor of The Times), featuring Amy Sackville (Granta), Bea Hitchman (Profile/Serpent’s Tail), Patrick Flannery (Atlantic), Ellah Allfrey (Granta editor), and Ravi Mirchandani (Atlantic Books).

Paths to Publication (5pm–6pm)
In the age of self-publishing what role can the literary magazine play in cementing the reputation of new writers? What is the relationship between experimental writing and publishing practices? The discussion will feature Jacques Testard and Ben Eastham (The White Review), and Christian Lorentzen (N+1/London Review of Books), among others.
