SYP Oxford does Working in Publishing 2015

We were delighted to be invited to the Oxford Brookes annual Working in Publishing day (9 March 2015), organised this year by Senior Lecturer Helena Markou. The event gets bigger and better every year, and this year was no exception!

The Working in Publishing day is designed to provide MA Publishing and third year undergraduate students with invaluable careers advice from industry professionals. The afternoon session of professional networking - cum - career speed dating is an excellent opportunity for students to meet publishers from over 30 different houses.

The day was rounded off with fascinating talk from David Shelley (forthcoming CEO of Little, Brown) who gave us some key stats about the recent spectacular rise of digital publishing, and the key attributes that would make a perfect publishing employee:

Financial acumen – could you translate a Profit & Loss statement?

Diversity of experience – publishers are looking for talented employees outside of the North London mould

Digitally savvy

Flexible – are you willing to sacrifice your dream of working exclusively in Editorial to maybe trying your hand at Production, Marketing, or Sales? David Shelley revealed that for one Editorial Assistant position they can receive as many as one thousand applications. For a recent Sales Assistant position, they received five applications. FIVE. You think about that.

Determined – it can be a stressful and hard slog to the top, but it will be worth it.

Special thanks to all of you who stopped by the SYP table, you really are a talented bunch and it was a pleasure speaking to you all. The future of publishing is in excellent hands!
