Publishing Society forming in the North!

Being part of a Northern based publishing company, I am sure you can appreciate how valuable a sense of community can be in the competitive world of publishing.
A group of publishing professionals and myself are setting up a Northern and Midland branch of The Society for Young Publishers (SYP) to help support and encourage those based in these areas who are either hoping to get into publishing, or working to progress within the industry.

The SYP already has branches in London, Oxford and Scotland, and the benefits their members enjoy include:

Monthly Speaker Meetings
Each month the SYP discusses a topic of relevance to the current publishing scene. Guest speakers are drawn from a wide background and we try to balance the meetings so that different opinions are represented. Entrance is FREE to members and £5 for non-members.
The SYP's small format magazine (approx 5 issues a year), mailed free to UK members, keeps you up to date with SYP activities and what's going on in the rest of publishing. All members are welcome to contribute articles or get involved with the running of the magazine.
Job Database
This is a free service available to members. We receive regular notice of situations vacant, often before they are advertised, which we forward on electronically to those members who have signed up to a bulletin.
Press emails
Receive regular reminders and updated details of all forthcoming SYP events, any other SYP news, and a heads-up on other publishing related events going on.
Trade discounts
The SYP frequently secures competitive discounts for its members on training courses, subscriptions and events.
Annual Conference
The SYP organises an annual all-day conference involving lectures and workshops run by senior industry figures on various aspects and skills relevant to working in publishing. This normally takes place in November.
The SYP is one of the few regular meeting places for people in publishing, and one of its most important benefits is the network of informal contacts and friendships you will make throughout the industry.

I think that publishing professionals in the North and the Midlands could really benefit from events and support such as this. I hope that you will consider coming along to our initial meeting to find out more.

We will be holding a meeting at a venue in the centre of Leeds, most probably in August. I would appreciate it if you could let me know if you would like to come along and if there are any specific dates/weeks which would be better for you.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Many thanks,
