Life in Publishing: it’s more than just books (and Tumblr!)

This year The Society of Young Publishers are hosting the 2013 conference at Oxford Brookes University with a keynote speech from Y. S. Chi, international businessman and a leader in the media and technology industry. Mr. Chi is Director of Corporate Affairs for Reed Elsevier, and is responsible for government affairs, corporate communications, corporate responsibility, and Asia strategy for Elsevier’s parent company. As non-executive Chairman of Elsevier, he works directly with governments, Elsevier customers and in industry associations worldwide. Mr. Chi serves as the President of the International Publishers Association, a global organization that represents the interests of more than 50 publishing industry association members from countries around the world.
This year the conference will focus on life in publishing and how to climb up that publishing ladder and what your next steps might be in your career path. The conference will focus on five different areas of publishing:
- Getting your career off to the right start
Topics will include the various roles in the industry; internships; and tips on getting into publishing
Suitable for: Masters students; anyone wanting to be a part of the industry.
- I work in Publishing, now what: Finding your path
Topics will be anchored around the idea of getting more out of what is already available. Growing a career, taking on bigger responsibilities such as speaking at conferences and travelling abroad.
Suitable for: Recently-graduated Masters students; first/second/third-year professionals
- Changes in Publishing: Identifying the new normal
Topics will examine the on-going shift from print to digital; increased social media marketing (and not being afraid to experiment; managing social media failures; advances in technology; managing relationships/working with vendors; outsourcing.
Suitable for: First/second/third-year professionals; SYP members-at-large; and individuals looking to making the transition into publishing from another industry.
- Careers in Publishing: Finding what you want
Gain important insights into the world of academic publishing; understand how a union can help you with some of the biggest changes in the industry happening now; and find out how to create a lasting career in books and journal production.
Suitable for: Third-year undergraduates; Masters students; Individuals wanting to re-train in publishing and/or looking to make the switch.

Topics will range from indie publishing; regional publishing (what’s happening outside of Oxford and London); bookselling; workers’ rights, equality and diversity topics, etc.
